Instagram post sizes: square, portrait, story and carousel
Instagram crops anything that isn't the shape it expects, and a crop is where your headline goes missing. Here are the sizes to design at, and where to keep the important parts.
The sizes
| Format | Size in pixels | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Story or reel | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
Design at these exact sizes and upload as they are. Instagram shows posts 1080 pixels wide, so designing bigger doesn't make them sharper; it only makes the files heavier.
Which shape to choose
- Portrait (4:5) takes the most room in the feed, which is why many accounts use it for everything. It's the best choice for most posts.
- Square (1:1) is the safe default when a design will also go to other networks.
- Landscape gets the least room in the feed. Use it only for pictures that need the width.
Where to keep the text
In the feed, your profile grid shows posts cropped to a portrait rectangle. Keep the headline in the middle of a square or portrait post, away from the edges.
In stories and reels, the top 250 pixels or so sit under your name and the bottom 340 under the reply bar and buttons. Keep text and faces in the middle and treat those bands as background.
Carousels
Every slide of a carousel shares the first slide's shape, so design all of them at the same size. A carousel of portrait slides is the most space you can get in the feed. Make the first slide a reason to swipe: a question, a number, a promise.
In Pozzly, a carousel is one design with several pages, and Download can give you every page at once.
One design in every size
Made a square post and want the story version too? Press Resize, tick the sizes you need and Pozzly makes a copy for each, laid out for its shape: backgrounds stretch, photos are recropped and text moves to fit.
Start from one of the Instagram post templates, or a portrait post or a story.
